THE WRITE UP: ATHERTON GAS & CAMPING, ATHERTON

The Store: Atherton Gas & Camping

Where they're located:

27 Mabel Street, Atherton QLD 4883

Their history:

Atherton Gas & Camping first opened its doors in 1974. Originally, the store only sold gas appliances and made gas deliveries to the surrounding area. When Mike & Roger’s parents took over in 1998, they took a look around and decided that all those road trippers heading north needed the right equipment, and so they decided to expand their range to include camping and outdoor gear.

Family runs strongly in the history of Atherton Gas & Camping, and since 2008 brothers Mike and Roger have managed the daily running of the store with their wives (Jenny and Annette, respectively). Their decades of experience have translated into an excellent range of camping gear. Only stocking items that they know are worthwhile has resulted in better and more thoughtful product offerings.

They still sell gas too, having a lot of expertise in the area. Mike and Roger are able to give expert advice on all things gas, from appliances to fittings and cylinders.

What they offer:

  • They’re a licensed gas re-test station, which means they can re-test and stamp gas your cylinder for another 10 years.
  • Gas cylinder refills by weight, so you only pay for what you get.
  • This is a Weber BBQ specialist store, so they stock the entire range. All the staff are lifelong Weber users and give the best advice on gas, charcoal and pellet BBQ’s.
  • And of course, a considerable range for nomads and travellers escaping winter in the south or doing a “lap of Oz”. In-store you’ll find a large range of toilet chemicals, water and waste hoses, pop up and compact kitchenware and a huge range of tent accessories such as poles, ropes, pegs etc.

What do you get?

Whilst the staff at AG&C love their range and the way they balance quality and price, it’s their service to the customer that they really pride themselves on. They love to work out what the best product for you is, not just what’s the easiest to sell. They’ll truly listen, figuring out what has worked and what hasn’t, what’s new and the best way to use new or different equipment.

It’s true they have a unique range, honed by years of experience – they have spent the last 15+ years on this, after all – but it’s the fact that they use the gear they sell that keeps everyone coming back for more.

After all, you can’t fake experience and personalised service.
