Soak Up the Summer Sun at These Top 8 Beach Camping Spots in Australia

We’re so lucky to be blessed with such beautiful beaches here in Australia, complete with picturesque waters, multi-coloured sands and a warm, inviting atmosphere. If waking up to the salty sea breeze and winding down to the sound of waves crashing against the shore sounds like your cup of tea, you might want to consider beach camping; something we believe that every Australian must experience at least once in their life.

Unsurprisingly, summer is the absolute best time to go beach camping, and it just so happens that it’s right around the corner. To help you pick the perfect destination for your summer adventure, we’ve listed 10 of our all-time favourites down below. So, pack your swag, an esky full of bevvies, and remember to slip, slop, slap, because this summer is about to be your most memorable one yet!

1. Whitehaven Beach, QLD

Whitehaven Beach, QLD

Located in the heart of The Great Barrier Reef, Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island is an absolute gem of a camping spot. With pristine azure waters and picturesque, white sands, you’re bound to create memories for a lifetime. Whether you want to swim, snorkel, paddle board or simply soak up the sun on a beach towel, Whitehaven is the epitome of summer fun. The gorgeous sunsets and sunrises here are guaranteed to make your stay.

2. Cape Range National Park, WA

Cape Range National Park, WA

Being situated in Exmouth, you know from the start that Cape Range National Park is going to offer a breathtaking beach camping experience. Combining the rugged limestone ranges with the pristine waters of the Ningaloo Marine Park, there are plenty of things to see and do when camping at this gorgeous landscape. Swimming and snorkelling in Exmouth are pretty mandatory, but if you need a break from the water, know that there are still plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring on land!

3. Honeymoon Bay, NSW

Honeymoon Bay, NSW

Located in Jervis Bay, Honeymoon Bay is a fabulous, sheltered bay perfect for swimming, snorkelling and paddle boarding. The only downside is that due to its popularity, getting a spot at this amazing campground during the summer holiday period can be a bit of a struggle, which is why a ballot is held every August in order to designate the spots. Although a summer vacation at this spot requires you to get on top of the situation a couple months earlier, we can promise you that it will be worth it in the end. If you missed out on a spot at Honeymoon Bay this summer, there are still plenty more opportunities throughout the year for you to experience what this campground has to offer. During less busy periods, Honeymoon Bay operates on a first come, first served basis.

4. Johanna Beach, VIC

Johanna Beach, VIC

If you’re ready to catch some awesome waves, Johanna Beach in Victoria is chock-full of them; and it just so happens to double as the perfect beach camping spot as well. Aside from being considered one of the best surfing spots for experienced surfers, Johanna Beach is also excellent for fishing, plus it’s located near many other natural attractions such as The Twelve Apostles, Triplet Falls and Melba Gully. If you’re big on hiking, why not tackle the Great Ocean Walk, which takes you from tall forests and rocky shores over to clifftops with spectacular views?

5. Vivonne Bay, SA

Vivonne Bay, SA

Voted as one of Australia’s best beaches, Vivonne Bay offers clear, still waters that make passing boats look like they’re floating on glass. The official campground is only walking distance away from the famous beach, and offers both powered and unpowered sites, along with amenities like toilets, showers and barbeques. Whether you want to do beach camping in a tent or in a caravan, Vivonne Bay caters for all sorts of outdoor adventurers.

6. Gunn Point, NT

Gunn Point, NT

Most outdoor-loving Territorians would’ve heard of Gunn Point, one of (if not the most) popular fishing and camping destinations in Northern Territory. With boat ramps available at Saltwater Arm, you might also want to think about taking your vessel out onto the water and going for a leisurely cruise. Just make sure to look out for saltwater crocodiles and stingrays!

7. Friendly Beaches, TAS

Friendly Beaches, TAS

With a name like Friendly Beaches, you’re guaranteed a hospitable time when you spend your holiday at Isaacs Point, located in Freycinet National Park. Bookings are essential for a stay on this long, white sandy beach, where there are plenty of opportunities for fishermen to cast a line or for avid surfers to catch some waves. Just keep in mind that there is limited drinking water available on site, so you’ll have to stock up on water bottles and canisters before arriving.

8. Hamelin Bay, WA

Hamelin Bay, WA

There’s a reason Hamelin Bay Holiday Park is one of the most popular places to park a caravan in WA. Situated right next door to Hamelin Bay itself, there are plenty of amenities at this campsite to keep you and your travelling companions feeling comfortable throughout the summer. When you’re not swimming around in the water or making friends with the stingrays, fire up the barbeque for a tasty seaside dinner, visit the lighthouse in Augusta, or check out the local wineries during the day.
