RV Camping List for Every First-Time Caravanner

RV Camping List for Every First-Time Caravanner

COVID-19 travel restrictions have reignited a lot of Australian’s love for travel. But with the international travel ban still in place (and who knows for how long), how is it that we’re meant to satiate our wanderlust in the not-so-distant future?

Well, the answer is sitting in our very own beautiful backyard. Australia is home to a myriad of Instagram-worthy beaches, wonderous woodlands, breathtaking gorges and spectacular waterfalls. And we’d argue that the very best way to see it all is by taking an epic RV camping trip around the country!

If you’ve just bought your RV or caravan and are wondering where to start, scroll down for our beginner-friendly camping list, which will tell you everything you need to know:

Caravan Setup Must-Haves

Ensure that you’re prepared for everything with these essential caravan accessories:

  • Tyre chocks (for accident prevention)
  • Caravan steps
  • Surge protector
  • Levelling blocks (for uneven terrain)
  • Basic tool kit

Cookware

Cast Iron Cookware

Unfortunately, you can’t be living on 2-minute noodles and s’mores for the entirety of your camping trip. Healthy, hearty meals are a must-have, and for that, you’ll need some essential cookware and food storage items:

  • Cookware (collapsible pots, pans, colanders, etc)
  • Kitchen utensils
  • Appliances (toasters, kettle, etc)
  • Cutlery
  • Can and bottle opener
  • Collapsible bowls and plates
  • Paper towels and napkins

Cleaning

  • Sponge and dishwashing liquid
  • Garbage bags
  • Air freshener
  • Antibacterial wipes
  • Surface cleaner

Outdoor Essentials

If you’re setting up camp at a beautiful campsite, you don’t want to be tucked away inside your caravan, when you could be enjoying the fresh, cool breeze and natural surroundings. If you want to set up the perfect ‘front porch’ outside your caravan, you’ll be needing the following items:

  • Caravan awning
  • Privacy screen
  • Ground sheet
  • Picnic rug
  • Folding table
  • Camping chairs
  • Mosquito coils and repellent
  • Matches
  • Portable fire pit (if there’s no fire pit on site)

Laundry

If you’re only heading out on a short trip, then it may be worth just chucking all your dirty clothes into a bag and tackling it when you get back home. However, if you’re going to be on the road for quite some time, you’ll be needing a collapsible laundry tub, clothesline, pegs and washing powder to do your laundry on the go.

Resources

The great thing about going caravanning is that unlike camping, you get to enjoy modern convenience at your fingertips. But to do this, you’ll need to have the right equipment on hand for the perfect set-up. To connect your caravan to the water mains tap at your caravan site, you’ll be needing some hoses and fittings. If only bore water is available at the site, then you may also have to bring along a water filter or purifier. Now, remember that if you’re using water in your caravan, you’ll need to have a means of disposing of all the wastewater. You want to avoid a smelly puddle of waste collecting right next to your caravan, so you’ll be needing a grey water hose and tank.

When you need to power or light up your caravan, then there are a few ways to do so. If you’re heading to a site with mains electricity, then you’ll be needing some heavy-duty cords and an adaptor, so that you can connect your caravan to the power supply. On the other hand, if this isn’t available to you, then you’ll have to rely on solar power or batteries to provide electricity.

Most caravan starter packs come with all your basic hoses and electrical leads, so it’s worth getting one of these if you’re just getting into the caravanning lifestyle.
