8 Best Camping Recipes You Should Try

You may not have access to all your fancy kitchen utensils and appliances whilst camping in the great outdoors, but that shouldn’t stop you from whipping up some seriously mouth-watering meals.

When you’re out camping, you want your meals to be tasty, nutritious and easy to prepare. Luckily, there are a number of camp-friendly recipes out there that fit all of the criteria. And, they are as quick and simple to cook as they are delicious. To inspire you for your next camping trip, we’ve rounded up 8 of our all-time favourite dishes down below.

The Equipment You’ll Need

Before we get into the nitty gritty, let us first start off by going over your camp cookware essentials. If you want to be able to prepare more than just sandwiches and instant noodles on your trip, then there are a few pieces of equipment worth investing in. They include a tripod or mesh grill to place over your campfire, a Dutch oven and large skillet. These are the perfect trio for preparing homecooked-style meals in the great outdoors. So, if you want to be able to prepare all the following dishes, we’d highly recommend getting them for your next camping trip.

With that said, let’s kick of our list of camp-friendly recipes:

1.Grilled Fish Tacos

Grilled fish tacos are a family-friendly recipe that even the fussy eaters will love. After all, everyone just puts their own tacos together. If you’ll be fishing during your camping trip, it’s also a great way to make use of the daily catch.

Prepare some integral sides, such as diced avocado, tomato, coleslaw, cheese and sour cream, then lay them all out for people to pick and choose from. Season your fish with salt, pepper, paprika, cumin, and cayenne pepper to give it a little kick. Drizzle it with some olive oil, then place it onto the grill. Don’t forget to warm your tortillas before you start assembling everything. Finally, invest in some quintessential taco sauce and lime juice to tie it all together.

2. Campfire Hash

If you love eating breakfast food all day every day, then you’re sure to fall in love with campfire hash; a delicious dish centred around golden, fried potatoes. The ingredients used are super simple. All you’ll need are 4 to 5 potatoes peeled and cubed, some diced bacon, a diced onion, eggs, cheese and green onions. Fry the potatoes in a skillet until they’re crispy, then follow up with the bacon, onion, and season with some salt and pepper. Finally, make some wells to crack and fry the eggs into. Season with chopped green onions, and Bob’s your uncle.

3. Chilli

Nothing says “camp-friendly” more than those meals where you can just throw everything into a pot and stir away. A hearty, healthy chilli is one of these recipes; and it’s chock full of nutrients and fibre to give you energy and keep you feeling full. This Dutch oven chilli recipe is undeniably one of our favourites. Best of all, it’s super versatile. So, you can swap out the type of mince, vegetables and beans used for your favourites.

4. Mac and Cheese

As the king of all comfort foods, Mac ‘n’ Cheese is just as tasty whether it’s eaten for lunch or dinner. It’s also super easy to make in the Dutch oven and can be spiced up using a variety of extra ingredients. Personally, we love to dress it up using bacon bits, breadcrumbs, and a generous grating of sharp cheese for some extra bite.

5. Lasagne

The great thing about lasagne is that you can prepare it before you even leave for your trip, then, when it’s close to dinner, simply leave it over the campfire to bake. Again, we’re recommending a Dutch oven for camp-friendly lasagne. Simply cook your meat and marinara sauce in the pot first, then take them out and assemble the lasagne as you would normally. Also, make sure you’re using no-boil lasagne sheets.

6. Chickpea curry

Perfect for vegans and vegetarians, chickpea curry is sweet, tangy and super simple to make. All you have to do is cook your onion, garlic, ginger and spices, then add in some tomatoes, chickpeas and coconut milk. After simmering the curry for about 10 minutes, season it with salt and lime juice. Although it’s possible to cook rice on a camp stove, you can always serve it with naan bread or couscous if you want to get it on the table quicker. If you’ve got leftovers the next day, spread it between two slices of bread and put it in a jaffle iron over the campfire. The result is guaranteed to be delicious.

7. French Toast

Give your regular morning an upgrade by dipping it in an egg mixture enriched with cinnamon, milk and a touch of vanilla extract. Dress the soggy bread with some sliced up fruits (strawberries and bananas are a cult favourite) then pop it in the pan to fry. Whipped cream and maple syrup take this classic breakfast food to the next level, so don’t even think of skipping out on them when it comes to plating up.

8. Apple Crumble

We couldn’t finish this list without including an after dinner treat that is something other than s’mores. It just so happens that this Dutch oven baked apple crumble is the perfect alternative if you’re sick of chocolate marshmallow biscuit sandwiches for the time being (we could never be sick of them, but we’re not judging).
